The Journey of Recovery

Board supplied by Wave Creations

Aboriginal artwork by Oolong House

This striking piece of Indigenous art, painted in vibrant acrylics on a surfboard, tells the powerful story of recovery from addiction. The design is deeply symbolic, rooted in cultural identity, resilience, and transformation. Central to the artwork is a sun-like motif—representing healing, new beginnings, and the warmth of community and reconnecting to culture —encircled by traditional patterns and meaningful symbols of ceremony.

The black footsteps that trace the length of the board depict the personal and spiritual journey of recovery, moving through struggle toward clarity, strength, and reconnection with culture and self. The use of red, yellow, and black pays homage to the Aboriginal flag, the dot work of reds and earth tones speak to both the deserts of our country but also the deserts along their journey of recovery, while the blue and white dot work evokes cleansing waters—symbolic of renewal and life.

This piece invites reflection on the healing power of culture, the significance of each step forward, and the importance of connection in overcoming addiction. It stands not only as a beautiful object but as a story of survival, strength, and hope riding the waves of change.
