This week is HIV Testing Week and next month is both Hepatitis Awareness Week and World Hepatitis Day (22nd July – 28th July). Events, resources and campaigns over these weeks are an opportunity to raise awareness about HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and encourage testing and treatment. HIV TestingMany people don’t know they have human immunodeficiency viruses, known as HIV, which means they are not getting the health benefits of being on HIV treatment. Not knowing about HIV also means it can be passed on to others. The only way to find out if you have HIV is by having a HIV test. In NSW, HIV testing is free, easy, and confidential with testing options; Hepatitis AwarenessHep B and hep C are viruses that affect the liver. A safe and effective vaccine can prevent people from getting hep B. With regular check ups with a doctor (every 6-12 months) and treatment (where necessary), hep B can be easily managed and people can live a long and healthy life. There is no vaccination available for hep C, however hep C can be cured. New effective medication cures over 95% of people with hep C in 8 to 12 weeks. Visit the Hepatitis NSW website for more!
